Over the holidays, I painted this 30×48″ scene. I wanted to do an abstract painting originally but the more I worked on it, the more fantasy was added. After a few days, this emerged: a small landscape of the reflections on the water and the glow of the lights in the little house. It is called “Silent Night” and I hope the feeling it gives you is a positive one. The moon at the end of December was another inspiration that was incorporated.

This commission took a lot more time in the studio because of the size and also the client’s directives. Originally, they wanted an “Abstract Expression” of their favorite place in the Abacos, Hopetown. They sent various photos of the famous lighthouse and their navy blue yacht and instructed me to use lots of texture and bright colors. Abstract is an odd term and I had to explain to them that if they wanted the lighthouse and boat and all the elements of a LANDSCAPE, it would be far less “abstract”. My brush strokes were quite loose and bold, mixing palette knife and large brushes, mixing custom colors to go with their rug in the room that they will hang this painting in, adding more texture and complimentary colors, enhancing the sunrise…etc. I finally went with my style of expressionistic painting to complete the landscape.

“Coral Bliss” is 30x15x1.5″ gallery wrap with some of the hot new colors for 2019. (coral and teals) Following the series called First Plunge Babies where the hatchlings scurry to the shore to have their first salty swim…now they explore the bottom and the reefs.
” Exploring the Reef” is similar to the above painting with the same fun expressionistic brush strokes and metallic touches. The gallery wrap is 40×16″ and perfect for a narrow space on a wall. It started with a base of peach colored gesso on the white canvas so the colors peak of from the layers of pastels.
I had this idea in my head of painting a mermaid interacting with a sea turtle. After numerous sketches, I came up with this idea. This siren is in the shallow waters near a reef so there are fish and seaweeds. when I was younger, I did quite a bit of diving with a snorkel and also dive tank and gear. I had to pull my memories of how the highlights hit the water and make patterns on the sea floor and everything else. Since this scene was totally made up, I also had to figure out how the light would hit certain parts of the mermaids body and how the shadows played with the highlights. I wanted to keep it my expressionistic/impressionistic stylings so didn’t try for realism. For instance the little fish are made from three quick brushstrokes.
The objective is to distill more emotion with luminous colorings and the sweep of the brushstrokes showing movement of the water. The seaweed fanning with the currents and bubbles floating up along with her hair give the feeling of being underwater.

Her face took the most time, She took on many faces until she finally appeared.
While waiting for a collector’s final directives for a commission that they wanted to have me do, I started a landscape to work out some ideas and techniques. They said they wanted it abstract, palette knife, textural, yet still have a tropical landscape as the design. Now, what some people consider to be abstract doesn’t mean void of imagery but just looser brushstrokes and not realistic. More expressionistic? Impressionistic? Its hard to define since it has elements of all. This painting is 60″ wide and 48″ tall.
The couple really liked this but it ended up being larger than they needed. They have decided to have me paint a 48×36″ gallery wrap and instead of a random island, they specifically wanted a landscape of the Hopetown lighthouse (in the Abacos) with their sailboat docked by the shore. I will post when completed the final painting. I have been working on it for a week and really like how it is progressing.
This larger tropical painting is available so if you have a large wall, it would be perfect…and an island life image will spark memories of past island vacations.
Here are some details showing the impressionistic brush strokes. Deliberate strokes giving the hint of the flower shapes or palm fronds…but not detailed or realistic.
Working on a painting this large is very physical. My arms and back get very sore after several hours but I love working large. Its rather bold and fun.
“Spring Surf” is a larger 48×36″x 1.5 gallery wrap. My intent for this painting was to have a central cameo of the surf which faded away to soft pastels and ivory.
It started with painting with flexible modeling paste and a palette knife. Then I made a glaze of raw umber and covered the dried plasters, making surf the details of the plaster were enhanced with the 3D textures. Then I made up a jar of unbleached titanium white, zinc white and very light blues and painted over the dried brown undertones.
This painting is available and would look great with your beach decor.
“Teal Octopus” is a large fanciful impressionistic painting. 48×36″ gallery wrap. I embedded gold leaf details and some 3D elements for interest. Using large brushes and bold strokes along with twisted medium brush details teaches me to be deliberate with my strokes and to not overwork.
As much as I like to paint, commissions are generally much harder and more stressful since its really hard to understand someone’s idea visually. The top triptych is three panels, each 24×48″ and the collector wanted a serene ocean view. This one is not quite done but close. The horizon needs to be straightened.
This 20×16″ landscape is for a photography client. She wanted a painting for her mom for Christmas that gives homage to her father who passed. The family had a memorial at the Jacksonville Beach Pier where they threw flowers into the water. He was a fisherman so I put the boat into the scene. I was nervous about the abstract impressionistic styling because you never know…but yay, she loved it.
A couple months ago, Dales Art Originals Gallery in Christophe Harbour in St. Kitts asked me to be part of a three woman show in February of 2019 and requested to have large paintings early so the high season may produce some sales. Dale needed three for the show but since shipping is so expensive to the islands, I decided to do a fourth. It was pretty intense for the last three weeks trying to make the deadline for shipping to south Florida. I sometimes worked into the nights. All paintings are 60×48″ (except one is 66×36″) and I had purchased a roll of primed canvas which came in a tube…perfect for shipping. I cut the canvas into the sizes I needed, stapled them to stretcher bars and painted away. Then I unstapled and rolled them together into the tube. There is a art gallery frame shop on the islands who can re-stretch them as she needs them for a hundred dollars each. The tube was sent yesterday to a friend who was flying to St. Kitts in a week and could take it for just the airlines baggage fees (115.) plus 37.00 to ship to her in South Florida. I made a rope handle on the cumbersome heavy cardboard 61×5″ tube. It weighed nearly 18 lbs. with the four paintings inside. I am so appreciative because if I shipped directly, there is a 50-52% duty (and 17% VAT for Dale) fee which basically would negate the possibility of having an international gallery.
